Diseases of the endocrine system are common, including conditions such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, and obesity. Endocrine disease is characterized by unregulated hormone release (a productive pituitary adenoma), inappropriate response to signaling (hypothyroidism), lack of a gland (diabetes mellitus type 1, diminished erythropoiesis in chronic renal failure), or structural enlargement in a critical site such as the thyroid (toxic multinodular goiter).
The endocrine system includes eight major glands that produce and release hormones that help control many important body functions, including:
- growth and development
- metabolism (digestion, elimination, breathing, blood circulation, maintaining body temperature)
- sexual function
Some most common endocrine disorders and medical conditions are:
Glucose homeostasis disorders:
- hyperthyroidism / hypothyroidism
- thyroid hormone resistance
Calcium homeostasis disorders and metabolic bone disease:
- parathyroid gland disorders
Pituitary gland disorders:
- posterior pituitary
- anterior pituitary
Sex hormone disorders:
- disorders of sex development / disorders of puberty
- menstrual function or fertility disorders (amenorrhea, polycystic ovary syndrome PCOS)
